She started her career as a television actress being featured in the TV films Malibu (1983) as well as California Girls (1985). She also played Gwendoline, a comedy character in the Land of the Yik-Yak (both 1984) as well as Bachelor Party (1985). Kitaen was born Julie Kitaen in San Diego, California in 1961, the third child born to Linda Kitaen (nee Taylor), a housewife and one-time beauty pageant participant, and Terry Kitaen, an employee of a neon sign company. Kitaen's mother, who was from Irish as well as Scottish descent was married to Terry Kitaen (an employee of a neon sign business). Her father was Russian-Jewish. Kitaen was educated Jewish. She started using the nickname "Tawny" at the age of 12 on her own initiative. She was dyslexic in her childhood. This led her to drop out from Mission Bay High School. 7.
