The film received nominations for the Academy Awards nine times and it was awarded two. Hanks played the role of Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's 1995 computer-animated feature Toy Story (1995). One year later, Hanks made his directorial debut with the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) about the rise and fall of a 1960s pop group as well as the part of a music producer. Richard Schickel of Time magazine called his performance "charming", and most experts agreed that Hanks' portrayal ensured his place in the premier romantic-comedy stars of his generation.
